Independent Medical Opinions (IMOs)

Independent Medical Opinions provide objective, evidence-based mental health evaluations that Veterans may submit as medical evidence in support of their VA disability claims.

IMOs may be used to:

  • Support initial VA mental health claims

  • Support requests for increased mental health ratings

  • Clarify diagnoses, symptom severity, and functional impairment

Nexus Letters

Nexus Letters are forensic medical opinions written specifically to meet VA evidentiary standards.

Key points:

  • Written using VA-recognized legal and medical language

  • Prepared by a licensed mental health provider

  • VA claims are federal in nature, allowing forensic opinions without geographic restrictions related to provider licensure

  • Designed to clearly address whether a condition is at least as likely as not related to military service

Psychological Evaluation & Testing

Comprehensive psychological evaluations may include:

  • Clinical interviews

  • Psychological testing (when clinically indicated)

  • Diagnostic clarification

  • Functional impact assessment

Veterans receive completed documentation that may be submitted directly with their VA claim as medical evidence.
